“When I liberate myself, I liberate others. If you don’t speak out, ain’t anybody going to speak out for you.” - Fannie Lou Hamer
Listen to Black women’s voices.
Today is Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day and Emancipation Day, in the United States of America, the day that enslaved people in Galveston TX learned that slavery had been outlawed two years earlier with the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Today, consider how you will live into the quote by the courageous and wise Fannie Lou Hamer. How will you speak out for yourself within your microcosm of family and community, including work? How will you speak out for those who are less privileged than you? How will you speak out for those who don’t have a voice, the more than human realms like rivers and trees and salmon?
Commit to liberation for yourself and may we all be liberated.

Brigid speaking out. A mural near her birthplace in Dundulk, Ireland. May we acknowledge the truth (speak it) and move into what we believe is possible (speak it).
